12holy

24 december – 6 januari

A Norse myth tells of a king who went to sleep on Christmas Eve and woke up on January 5th. That night he walked into the temple and recounted a dream that lasted twelve days and nights. Across many cultures, the days following the winter solstice have been celebrated. When the sun starts moving northward again around the evening of December 24th, a special energy can be felt in nature. These days invite to take time for yourself, to rest and reflect.

Since time immemorial, the Twelve Holy Nights have been observed in various religions and cultures. These special days, beginning on Christmas Eve and are followed by the Epiphany day on January 6th, can be experienced as a long dream. Use these days to retreat, much like a winter hibernation. While they are about relaxation and rest, these days—filled with unique energy—also call for mindfulness and awareness.

Rituals for the Twelve Nights

Take a dedicated moment each evening before bed to be still and attune yourself to the energy of the night and day. You might keep a journal to record your experiences and reflections during this period.

Energetically, the year concludes around December 21st, during the winter solstice. This is the moment when the sun reaches its southernmost point and seems to pause for a few days before resuming its northward journey, signaling longer days ahead. These days are shrouded in darkness, with the sun appearing only weakly during the day. Everything feels still. When the sun appears to move again, the Holy Nights begin.

On Christmas Eve, as we celebrate the return of the light, we also honor the beginning of a new energetic year. You may notice a new cycle unfolding within yourself and those around you.
